About the event

This hybrid workshop is part of Zinn Education Project’s Teach Truth Day of Action and is being held on zoom and at the historic site of Mt. Zion United Methodist Church, Eastport, 612 Second St, Annapolis, MD, a cornerstone of Eastport's African-American community. #TeachTruth.

Join us to root out racism by learning the truth of our past, working toward healing and repair, and learning how the act of Reparative Genealogy creates potential avenues to reparations. This teach-in, the first of a 3-part series, features Briayna Cuffie, a local historian, author, and co-founder of Reparations4Slavery. Briayna and Lynda Davis, co-founder of SURJ3A and the Coming To The Table Annapolis Group, will share about how their ancestors’ stories have been affected by slavery, white supremacy,  and racism and their respective journeys. Linda Mundy, co-founder of SURJ3A, will give a brief presentation about Showing Up for Racial Justice.

Rebecca Benzer, SURJ3A member, will provide a short presentation about genealogy, resources, and her family story. The SURJ3A Healing Team will also introduce some practices for resilience and healing from Resmaa Menakem's book: My Grandmother’s Hands: Racialized Trauma and the Pathway to Mending Our Hearts and Bodies.
